That Start. Junior goes Down Town

There's been some real enthusiasm for Port tack starts recently. Need to get to the right hand side of course? Tacking a Moth is risky and slow unless you really have your foiling tacks dialled in. What better than fire it up on port with 30 secs to go, blast down the line and look for the gap, be first to the favoured side, especially in Long Beach. What could be better right? Well if your timing is slightly off, and in Moths we are talking by say 2 - 5 seconds, and the starboard tack foilers are pushing the pin equally aggressively you get the above sequence.... Awesome to watch if not a bit scary. Closing speeds on opposite tacks would be around 25ish knots. One touch and we would be picking a million carbon pieces out of the ocean. Full marks to Junior for giving it a go, but kudos to Adam who really pulls it off (BR in shot s2, 3 and 4).

  1. Nothing like trying to win the boat end on port. Unorthodox for sure

  2. I remember thinking about letting him have it when we were bow to bow. He just had to look a little more intimidating and he would have won it.

  3. Looks more like he was trying to win the pin end on port, which is pretty epic:) .... I think Bates won the boat end, with Adam hiking across about mid line... Got another photo I will post of aftermath, with Junior completely turtle on the line... Got to admit it was really awesome to watch and good on Matt for giving it a go! If I remember correctly it was Adam who really pulled it off. I don't have the photos but does anyone remember one of the practice starts on Friday with Bates squeezing Charlie out at the pin end on Port? Brotherly love...not!

  5. Mate, keep doing what you're doing, it always awesome to sail with you. Dont worry about taking crap, it won't kill you but it'll make you stronger, or something like that! Days like that and starts like that would have other fleets calling for the protest room or crying for their Moms. This is what makes Moth sailing the blast it really is. Will dig out whole photo set and send to you. See you at the Gorge.
